Comments from me.
The previous week whe...Hi Brian

Comments from me.

The previous week when asking me for the game Brian had queried the terrain I had set up for Flames of War. What I had tried to do with that was mimic a desert with wadi setup.

Brian asked about the usual ettiquette for setting up a WAB table and, I must admit, that's not soemthing we do, the table just gets set up by all of us as fair as we can do.

So I figured a symmetrical table was the fairest thing here. It was less busy that I sometimes make it, so it wasn't perfect for cavalry, but there were nice open areas for charging.

My list, Norwegians.(From memory, I had to fiddle with the numbers when Brian increased the points level)

--Jarl
--Gothi
--Unit of 20 Hirdmen with a mix of throwing spears and 2H axes. 2 Berserkers in the unit. Full COmmand

--Unit of 13 Hirdmen with throwing spears. Full command
--Unit of 28 Bondir, Full command
--Unit of 20 Bondir, full command
--Two units of 10 Bondir archers

The larger hirdmen unit was put into three ranks by 8, including the berserkers and the Jarl. They anchored the left flank.

The smaller were used as skirmishers on the right to filter through the woods.

The Big bondir unti kind of held the centre right with the smaller on the left.

One archer unit screened the large hirdmen unit with the berserkers, the other were on a hlll to fire at things coming down my left.

With rough terrain in the centre that would low advance and cavalry on my left I hoped to try and extend my line with the right formemost and to drive his infantry in front of his cavalry and make life hard for him. Didn't work that way but that was the plan.

Brian kept his Dux close enough to his serjeants and Liberi so that they had his leadership, and they needed it with the casualties that the archers were causing. How come it's only me that suffers from terrible morale rolls!

THe whole issue of the Godi, which I have never used before, was interesting> Thee Bondir should have made a save easily, the General was within range, but they screwed up. Add, of course, it was the one battle where I DIDN'T take an ASB.

After the battle we rolled for the end turn, it would have been turn 5, which would have suited me as I was winning then. We halted before the full conclusion but I have to disagree with Brian as to the inevitable conclusion.

My Bondir running off left me with an hole in my line with a unit behind it, his cavalry were coming to support his foot milites who were resisting quite happily the hirdmen on their flank and the Bondir on thir front. OF course my Hirmen had to charge in in Skirmish order so they couldn't get the full benefit of throwing spears.

Yes I ssaid to Brian that when his cavalry was on the run that's when I woulg probably have conceded but that's me. As it was Brian was right, as the next turn proved crucial for him.

I will take Berserkers in a bigger battle, especially when facign armies with smalle runits, but for smaller armies they are just a point sink that can harm me more than my opponent.

Don't worry about my crap dice, they are legendary. They make Andy P's dice rolls look good!

We forgot the ONE time that the Fury of the Norsemen rule would come into play, when I charged your archers that guarded the flank of the foot milites, but that didn't matter in the end.

The use of the archers to cover the flank was good, but it is a problem with having a unit like that too close to another unit, it lets the charger redirect onto another unit.

Anyway, I had fun and I got to try soem new things, I don't think Brian put down my one instructive omission. He had forgotten to move his Serjeants after they broke through and I didn't point it out to him.

It was weird though. I think it was the first WAB or Warhammer game where I have ever outnumbered and had more units than the enemy!

colAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4494993840691690623.post-2584466651267365682006-11-29T03:12:00.000+00:002006-11-29T03:12:00.000+00:00Excellent battle report!
